PERENNIAL LEGUMES - Nitrogen Producers
KingFisher Alfalfas
A 3 to 5 year crop that is an excellent source of protein. Alfalfa is the most drought tolerant legume and does not thrive under wet conditions. As a legume, it fixes its own nitrogen but utilizes a lot of potassium. Its fiber is not as digestible as grasses, so adding late heading grasses to alfalfa improves the feeding qualities of alfalfa and reduces weeds and insect pressure.
King’s AgriSeeds has selected these premium alfalfas for forage quality, persistence, and yield performance. They all have excellent leaf to stem ratios, impressive disease resistance, yield and winter hardiness. With the exception of Econo Alfalfa, these products are the latest superior varieties on the market. Put these alfalfas to work on your farm by choosing the one(s) are most adapted to your management and soils. You will be pleased with both performance in the field and in the barn.

Red Clover Improves Protein Utilization and Protection
If your rations have too much NPN (non protein nitrogen), consider adding red clover to your forage system. During ensiling, red clover has 30 to 90% less conversion of protein to NPN than alfalfa. Alfalfa breeders are trying to incorporate a unique red clover enzyme system (PPO) into alfalfa. But, why wait for this trait to be incorporated into alfalfa, when you can simply plant one of our significantly improved red clovers with your favorite KingFisher alfalfa and our leafy late heading grasses. For more technical details, read RED CLOVER IN THE “TWENTY-FIRST” CENTURY written by R.R. Smith of University of Wisconsin.
Red Clovers
Red Clovers are more drought tolerant and productive than White Clover, but not quite as high quality. Use some of each for grazing! In Penn State’s trials, the average yield of all the Red Clovers was a little higher than the average yield of the leafhopper resistant alfalfas, the year after seeding! Red Clover is more tolerant of wet soils and lower Ph than alfalfa.
Freedom MR!
Freedom! is a Red Clover from Kentucky which was bred for dry matter yield. It is noted for having thinner stems with less pubescence (hairs), which allows it to dry faster. In our test plots, Freedom! looks very impressive. Quality test results have been excellent as well. Our most recommended red clover for hay! Freedom has proven to be a very high yielding red clover with very good heat tolerance as well as winter hardiness.
RENEGADE
An erect, early flowering medium red clover with improved resistance to southern anthracnose and downy mildew.
Start
This red clover variety is persistent and provides good yields of high protein and palatable forage. Start Red Clover will not grow as tall as other red clover, but is denser and more persistent and has higher quality. It acts like an in-between of red and white clover. It’s a grazing type of red clover.
White Clovers
White clover is the backbone legume of grazing systems, and it can be mixed with other species in high moisture hay systems. It spreads by rhizomes which are stems that run on the soil surface. The quality of white clover is very high. It will not lignify in hot weather like alfalfa, red clover and grasses. Like other legumes, white clover fixes its own nitrogen and will help supply nitrogen to other plants.White clover thrives under warm, moist conditions. Droughts, however, can be hard on white clover stands.
Alice
Alice is a tall, large leaved clover developed for exceptional yields of palatable, high quality, high protein forage. Vigorous spring and summer growth makes it a good choice for cutting or grazing management. Alice has greater stolon density than most ladino types, allowing for better persistence under intensive, continuous grazing. Very popular!
Barblanca Ladino Clover
A large-leaf, white clover with excellent persistence under intensive grazing. Developed from heat tolerant germplasm, Barblanca is a highly suitable cultivar for transition zone and southern USA. Barblanca has an aggressive growth habit and is perfect for interseeding in tall fescue and ryegrass pastures.
RegalGraze
A high yielding ladino clover that has been selected under tight grazing pressure by University of Georgia researchers. This clover will excel in the south but will also perform extremely well in northern areas as it has been proven to withstand Wisconsin winters. Regalgraze is palatable and very persistent, but not so aggressive that it will push out grasses, which can become a problem with some legumes.
RIVENDEL
A small leaved white clover that is very persistent in pastures. Very suitable for both cattle and sheep grazing.
PREMIUM CLOVER MIXTURE
A mixture of our best perennial clovers. Contains approximately 50% Freedom Red Clover, 25% Alice White Clover and 25% Regalgraze Ladino Clover. Great for frost seeding, inter- seeding pastures and thinning alfalfa fields. Can also be used to complement many of our all grass mixtures.
White Clovers are the only legume, or grass, that does not get tougher or lignify in hot weather.
- Bred for leafiness and grazing tolerance
- Natural Tannin Content controls internal parasites
- Little insect and disease problems
- Tolerates low pH and fertility
- Drought Tolerant
- Sericea Lespedeza is a perennial warm season legume that is a little slow to establish.
- Seeding practices are similar to alfalfa except seeding date is delayed to when soil temperatures are 60F and rising.
- Seed at 20 to 30 lbs per Acre. We recommend adding 5 lbs of Wonderleaf Pearl Millet to help control summer annual weeds.
